Universal Design for Learning: Getting IT right from the start!
Universal Design for Learning, or UDL, is an approach that takes as its starting point an inclusive philosophy which postulates that if design considers everybody from the start - regardless of abilities or challenges - then the need for adaptation is dramatically reduced. It began in architectural practice to provide inclusive access in the public realm, and is now widely embraced as a strategy by educationalists and resource creators and developers, particularly in the USA, that is philosophically sound and socially supportive. It is an approach that emphasises the synergy between aspiration and pragmatism. This session will give you an understanding of the principles and possibilities for creative teaching and learning that UDL brings for improving inclusion and accessibility in your setting. We will show that by harnessing the strength of a truly inclusive strategy we can improve options and outcomes for staff and students.
