Exploring inclusive innovation and game-changing EdTech in the North Hall

Exploring inclusive innovation and game-changing EdTech in the North Hall

As an advisory board member for Bett UK, and a chartered teacher managing a SEND (special educational needs and disability) provision in Cheltenham, my annual pilgrimage to the ExCeL London is typically anchored in the South Hall. This area, rich with insights into teaching, learning, and school leadership, has always been my go-to zone. However, January 2025 marked a pivotal shift in my Bett experience. For the first time, I ventured into the North Hall to host the Innovation Theatre, a journey that not only broadened my perspective but also redefined my understanding of educational innovation.

The North Hall, often perceived as the realm of cutting-edge technology and futuristic concepts, unveiled itself as a treasure trove of practical solutions and forward-thinking discussions. The Innovation Theatre, in particular, was a hub of activity, showcasing a global array of emerging EdTech startups and facilitating expert panel discussions that resonated with educators from diverse backgrounds.

One of the standout moments during my time in the Innovation Theatre was the Startup Zone Showcase. These dynamic, high-energy sessions brought together an international line-up of young EdTech companies, each presenting bold, game-changing ideas poised to reshape the future of education. The atmosphere was electric, full of creativity, ambition, and forward-thinking.

As someone committed to personalising education for learners with additional needs, I found these sessions particularly valuable. They highlighted that innovation isn’t just about AI or robotics; it’s also about rethinking how we engage learners, build inclusive platforms, and empower educators with the right tools, especially in complex, high-need environments.

The North Hall's emphasis on inclusivity was further exemplified by sessions like “Assistive technology in education; navigating the challenges and opportunities”. This session explored actionable insights into the critical needs within education.

The fabulous introduction of the SEND Village in Bett 2025 highlighted the event's commitment to supporting educators and students with special educational needs. This dedicated space provided resources and discussions focused on accessibility, student wellbeing, and behaviour management, reinforcing the importance of inclusive education.

For educators like myself, managing SEND provisions, the North Hall offered invaluable insights into how technology can be harnessed to support diverse learning needs. The sessions underscored the importance of integrating technology not just as a tool but as a means to develop inclusivity and enhance learning outcomes for all students.

The government's commitment to modernising the education sector, as articulated by Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson in her keynote address, further emphasised the role of technology in supporting children with SEND. She highlighted initiatives focused on modernising schools and addressing the digital divide, including training sessions on assistive technology and plans to incorporate such training into national programs for new teachers.

My journey into the North Hall was more than a physical transition; it was a transformative experience that expanded my understanding of the possibilities within educational technology. For fellow teachers and SEND managers, I urge you to venture beyond your usual zones at Bett UK. The North Hall is not just about futuristic gadgets; it's about practical, inclusive solutions that can be implemented in our schools today.

Embracing the innovations showcased in the North Hall can empower us to better support our students, particularly those with special educational needs. By integrating these technologies thoughtfully, we can create more inclusive, effective, and engaging learning environments.

As we look forward to future iterations of Bett UK, let's commit to exploring all avenues of innovation, ensuring that we are equipped with the knowledge and tools to provide the best possible education for every learner.
