Artificial intelligence is moving faster than education systems were designed to accommodate. New tools are emerging almost daily, promising to reduce workload, personalise learning and streamline lesson planning. Yet amidst this rapid innovation, one question has become increasingly urgent: how do we ensure AI strengthens teaching, rather than diluting it?

It was a challenge explored during Bett UK 2026 by John Roberts of Oak National Academy, but it also reflects a much broader conversation taking place across education. As schools increasingly adopt AI, attention is shifting away from what the technology can do and towards the foundations that determine whether it can be trusted.

AI is exposing the limits of traditional curriculum design

This requires more than technical development. It calls for shared frameworks that define quality, establish curriculum alignment and ensure AI systems reflect evidence-informed teaching practice.

In education, trust has always mattered. In an AI-enabled future, it may become the deciding factor between meaningful innovation and widespread scepticism.

The role of teachers becomes even more important

One of the persistent misconceptions surrounding AI is that it will automate teaching. The reality emerging across the sector suggests something quite different.

High-quality AI has the greatest potential when it amplifies teacher expertise rather than replacing it. By reducing repetitive administrative tasks and accelerating lesson preparation, AI can create more space for the professional judgement, relationships and adaptability that remain uniquely human.

This reflects a wider shift in how educational technology is being designed. Increasingly, successful tools are moving away from prescribing practice and towards supporting it - providing adaptable resources that teachers can shape around the needs of their own pupils, classrooms and communities.

Rather than diminishing teacher autonomy, AI has the opportunity to strengthen it.

The next phase of AI adoption depends on standards, not speed

The education sector has reached an important inflection point. Early conversations understandably centred on the possibilities AI presents. The next stage must focus on the conditions required for those possibilities to translate into meaningful outcomes for learners.

That means developing agreed standards for AI quality, creating trusted curriculum-linked datasets, improving the machine readability of curriculum content and ensuring every AI-generated resource is grounded in sound pedagogy.

These are not simply technical challenges. They are strategic decisions that will shape how confidently schools embrace AI over the coming decade.

Building AI on strong educational foundations

Examples are already emerging of AI reducing teacher workload while maintaining curriculum integrity. When AI is developed using trusted curriculum resources and evidence-informed pedagogy, it has the potential to save valuable planning time without compromising educational quality.

But these successes also reinforce a wider lesson.

The future of AI in education will not be determined by whichever platform introduces the newest feature. It will be determined by whether the sector can build the governance, curriculum infrastructure and professional confidence needed to use these technologies well.

As discussions throughout Bett UK 2026 demonstrated, the most important question is no longer whether AI belongs in education. It is whether education can create the foundations that allow AI to deliver on its promise while protecting the quality of teaching that learners deserve.
