Historically, children's online safety has focused on extreme harm on the premise that if we show children harm they will be able to recognise and avoid harm online ' but we don't learn to drive by solely watching films of car crashes. UK Safer Internet Centre and SWGfL wanted to 'evolve' the online safety messages that children and young people were being taught into something more appropriate; more meaningful; that encouraged reflection; that generated positive outcomes. ProjectEVOLVE introduced assessment that has started to disclose exactly the digital skills they have. Based on the initial 150,000 assessments, the presentation will, for the first time, provide in insight into some of these conclusions, misconceptions; secure knowledge or simply wrong assumptions that children have.
