Francis Jones is an experienced science teacher and school leader as well as the CEO of STEM@Home. As a student from a working-class ethnic background with parents who did not attend higher education, he has witnessed first hand how the education system is structured to prevent people like him from climbing up the social ladder due to the reliance on social and cultural capital within university personal statements and a reliance on scientific capital within examinations. As a qualified science teacher and former middle leader in a school, he witnessed the difficulties that students face and saw the potential for edtech products to help address educational inequality. Schools have limited budgets for STEM education and teachers are not always capable of delivering practicals. Science practical's are a vital and compulsory part of the science curriculum, but are logistically difficult to set up and organise. Many students end up skipping the practical altogether, losing out on the tangible experience and learning. STEM@Home was inspired by the lack of accessible and safe science tools in the market that catered specifically to GCSE students. Their program is designed to provide quality STEM education that is affordable and inclusive to all students. It also aims to improve the ability of non-subject specialists to teach science to students with special educational needs.
