Ben Gomes
Ben leads the Learning & Sustainability organisation at Google. He oversees the teams focused on harnessing technology to scale learning and education around the world and drive environmental impact. The Global Sustainability Team (GST) drives the development and implementation of Google’s cross-company sustainability strategy to accelerate the transition to a clean future. We lead initiatives that prioritise climate resilience, clean energy adoption, greenhouse gas reductions and reporting, water stewardship, and scalable digital products that solve pressing environmental challenges.
The Learning team works across the company to support educators and learners with dedicated Google for Education products like Google Classroom, Chromebooks and more, and also by leveraging our AI capabilities to create academic and learning experiences on Google Search, Scholar, Gemini and YouTube.
As one of Google’s first principal engineers and an early Google Fellow, he worked on search for over 20 years, in the end leading the Google Search organisation, which included Google Search, Assistant and News. Prior to joining Google, Ben earned his BS from Case Western University in Ohio and his Ph.D. in computer science from UC Berkeley. He was born in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania and was raised in Bangalore, India.
