Arjan Dhaliwal

Founder, BackPocketTutor

Arjan is an experienced educator and technologist with over a decade of tutoring experience, specialising in 11+ preparation and GCSE-level mathematics. For the past ten years, he has worked closely with students and families to build confidence, close knowledge gaps, and develop the skills needed to succeed in selective entrance exams and the wider school curriculum. 

Throughout his tutoring career, Arjan became increasingly aware of two consistent challenges: the lack of high-quality, targeted resources aligned to real exam standards, and the difficulty students face accessing structured practice between lessons. Over time, he built a large personal library of materials to support his own teaching — thousands of questions, explanations, mock tests, and skill-builders covering Maths, English, reasoning skills, and core curriculum topics. Arjan saw first-hand how regular, personalised practice made an enormous difference to outcomes, but also how much manual work was involved in managing progress, marking, and feedback. 

Alongside tutoring, Arjan developed a career in technology and data science, working in both the public sector and leading technology companies, where he gained experience designing platforms, analysing user journeys, building measurement frameworks, and creating scalable digital tools. That technical background gave Arjan the practical skills to think bigger about how tutoring resources could be delivered — not just to individual students, but to schools and families at scale, without losing the personalisation that makes tuition effective. 

In 2025, Arjan combined my passion for education with my technical skills to build BackPocket Tutor: an online learning platform specifically designed to support 11+ preparation and broader curriculum development, particularly in mathematics. The goal was simple — to create the kind of structured, supportive system he wished existed when he started tutoring: one that provides carefully curated practice, tracks progress automatically, adapts to student needs, and gives parents and teachers clear visibility of learning outcomes.
