Kiran Patel

Lecturer, University of East London

Kiran Patel is a Lecturer in Computing and Digital Technologies at the University of East London, technology educator, industry practitioner and community activator passionate about using technology to create opportunity, develop future skills and solve real-world problems.

With experience spanning primary school coding clubs too higher education, web development, digital transformation, AI, emerging technologies and community innovation, Kiran works at the intersection of education and industry. His approach is strongly focused on moving beyond theoretical learning and creating practical opportunities for learners to build, experiment, collaborate and develop solutions to genuine challenges.

Kiran leads and supports a range of initiatives connecting students, staff, industry, and local communities, including the CDT Maker Club, digital skills programmes, industry-facing projects, and mentoring activities. Through these initiatives, learners gain hands-on experience across areas such as AI, coding, web technologies programming, digital fabrication, electronics, 3D printing, and emerging technology.

A strong advocate for AI and future technical skills, Kiran is particularly interested in how education can prepare learners for a rapidly changing world of work while ensuring that emerging technologies remain accessible, responsible, and useful. He champions learning models that connect technical knowledge with creativity, employability, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving.

Kiran also brings an industry perspective through his work as a web development and digital technology practitioner, helping bridge the gap between what learners' study and the technologies, practices, and expectations they encounter beyond university.

His work has been recognised through university teaching and learning awards, including recognition for Careers-Led Teaching and Learning, and he continues to develop innovative approaches to connecting education with industry and communities.

As a Bett 2027 Ambassador, Kiran is keen to contribute to conversations around AI in education, future skills, digital inclusion, practical technology education, employability, and the role of educators in shaping the next generation of digital innovators. He is particularly interested in sharing what works in practice, challenging conventional approaches and connecting people across education, technology, industry, and the wider community.
