Growing up online: Confronting misogyny and protecting young people

Wellbeing Diversity & Inclusion Digital Citizenship

From deepfake pornography to biased algorithms that amplify sexist content, schools are being pushed to respond to risks that evolve faster than most policies can keep up. In this candid and thought-provoking conversation, Laura Bates, bestselling author and founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, and Samantha Booth, Chief Reporter at Schools Week, will explore how and why harmful narratives targeting boys are flourishing online; the impact of algorithmic bias and digital manipulation on attitudes and behaviour; practical, evidence-informed strategies schools can use to educate and safeguard students; and how educators can foster open, inclusive dialogue that supports boys and young men rather than alienating them.

They will also consider the role teachers and leaders can play in building digital literacy, empathy, and gender equality across school communities. This session offers educators at every level, teachers, pastoral leads, safeguarding officers, senior leaders, and policymakers, actionable insights into understanding the pressures students face and empowering them to push back against misogyny and online harms, providing a nuanced and constructive look at how education can drive meaningful cultural change.
