Teaching & Learning
Soon after researchers showed 'reading for pleasure' helps children outperform peers in all subjects, including science and maths, it became a curriculum objective. But seven years on, 25% of Year 6s still miss national literacy standards, and National Literary Trust (NLT) surveys show recreational reading is dropping. But can children learn to enjoy books? Storyteller Chip has seen it happen consistently, having helped schools across the UK to do just that. In his talk, you'll see proof of the inspirational power of stories, practice the most essential skill to 'read like a storyteller' (hint: it's NOT 'doing a voice'), and feel equipped to champion the joy of books with your class. Afterwards, stay in the Teaching & Learning Theatre to celebrate the launch of Chip's new book, containing 9 stories and 14 lesson plans to inspire recreational readers.
