Associate Professor in Classics, Director of the Summer School in Homer

Dr Antony Makrinos is an Associate Professor in Classics in the Greek and Latin Department at UCL. He is also a Senior Teaching Fellow at the Advance HE and an accredited learning technology professional in the UK and internationally (CMALT) with specialisation on VR and AI. Antony has also been a Research and Teaching Fellow and a visiting Lecturer at KCL, UCL and Queen Mary College.

Antony’s interests span a range of areas including the Homeric epics, ancient Greek education, scholarship in Byzantium, reception studies focusing on Homer in film and documentaries, and pedagogy and Classics with immersive technologies like VR and AI. Antony has also been working with external companies and institutions hosting courses and talks (for example with the British Library), and he has researched the use of Classics in the luxury retail sector in order to produce consultation work for luxury companies such as Louis Vuitton.

He is currently working on an edition of Eustathius' Commentary on Homer's Odyssey (Book 1). Antony is a member of EUROCLASSICA and a member of the UCL Academic Board. He has been the Digital Learning Lead for the Department of Greek and Latin for many years, and he has recently been made the Stream Lead of Virtual Humanities for the new Centre of Humanities at UCL.

Antony’s passion is to expand, develop, and evolve the way of learning and engagement of students. He is very enthusiastic about including immersive technologies in new teaching and learning environments especially in traditional fields such as the Humanities and the Classics.

For the last 13 years, Antony has successfully directed the Summer School in Homer, UCL which takes place annually at the Department of Greek and Latin. He is eager to continuously create new ways in which the students of the Summer School engage with new immersive technologies.
